Liposuction Options and Techniques

What are your Liposuction options?

A lot has changed since the earliest days of the liposuction surgery. The procedure used to require hospitalization and general anesthesia for every patient undergoing the surgery, and even occasionally required blood transfusions to replace all of the blood lost during the procedure

This was under the old “dry technique,” a liposuction technique that has basically been made obsolete by technological advances in liposuction since the 1990’s. Dr. Stompro mentions that most procedures today can be performed with local anesthesia and with much quicker recovery.

Here are some of the more common liposuction techniques that are available in today’s world:

• The “Wet Technique” - Fluid is injected to the area of the procedure to help loosen fat cells and reduce bruising. Once the cells are loose, they are drawn out in a surgical vacuum device.
• The “Super-Wet Technique” - The same basic idea is used for this procedure as the wet technique, but the amount of saline in the fluid used is more diluted. This surgery is preferred by some surgeons for the way it balances fluid levels.
• The Tumescent Technique - A large amount of liquid is injected into the area of the procedure, with the contents of that liquid even more diluted than the wet and super wet techniques. More liquid means more space created in between muscles and fatty tissue, which gives the surgeon more space to operate. However, this procedure takes longer than both the wet technique and the super-wet technique.
• Internal Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction - Ultrasonic vibrations are transmitted inside the body that works to break down fat cells. This liquefies the fat and makes it easier to remove. This option requires less movement by the surgeon, which means it is easier on the patient’s body. However, there is an increased risk of developing seromas, burns, necrosis or scarring
• External Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction - Like the internal option, ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy the fat. But in the external option, the energy is applied from outside the body through the skin rather than from inside the body. Surgeons believe this creates less risk of seromas and necrosis.
• Power-Assisted Liposuction - A specialized cannula, that moves mechanically, is used to reduce the amount and the speed of movements required by the surgeon. This is a more subtle, smooth surgery option, which is easier on the patient’s body. This is a relatively new procedure.

Skin Resurfacing: Laser vs. Fraxel

Laser vs. Fraxel

Skin resurfacing can restore and rejuvenate the skin. With time our skin shows signs of aging from the exposure to the sun and elements.

Until recently there were two treatment methods to rejuvenate the skin; ablative and non-ablative treatments. Ablative lasers treat deep into the dermis of the skin by removing the upper epidermis. It treats both the surface and deep layers of the skin. This means a more effective treatment of lines and wrinkles but with a longer recovery. It couples up nicely with surgery. Non-ablative treatments preserve to epidermis but never get deep into the skins dermis. This means an easy recovery but not as aggressive of a treatment.

Fraxel is a new technology that treats deep into the dermis while preserving the epidermis. It works by laying down a laser pattern which gets deep into the dermis without ablating or taking away the epidermis. This means a deep treatment without the prolonging recovery. Non-ablative lasers are appealing because there is little to no down time. Fraxel now bridges the gap between ablative and non-ablative treatments. It treats deep into the dermis, preserves the epidermis and has little to no down time. It usually takes 4-5 treatments spaced one month apart

The Tummy Tuck - Abdominoplasty

Looking for a new you? Dr. Stompro mentions that Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Whether you’ve just had a baby or lost a substantial amount of weight, or just can’t shake those last stubborn pounds, a tummy tuck is a safe and effective way to regain the body you had or obtain the body you want.

During a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, the loose skin and fat in the abdominal area is removed. In the case after childbearing or weight loss, the weakness or laxity of the abdominal wall is repaired before removing the excess skin and fat. This skin and fat is then pulled and excised. The procedure is especially effective for removing stretch marks in the lower abdomen. After the remaining skin is tightened, the navel is refreshened for a natural look.

When discussing your desired look with your surgeon, there are a number of things to consider. First, while tummy tucks work well to remove stretch marks from the lower abdomen, in some cases not all stretch marks can be eliminated. It is also important to keep in mind that your safety is our doctor’s foremost concern. He will remove as much fat and skin as is safe, while considering the optimal look and healing.

You will also need to consider your skin type and age when planning with your doctor. These factors will affect the obtainable results, as will your weight. It is best if you have been at a stable weight for at least six months prior to your surgery to ensure your results can be maintained in the long run. Patients who intend to be pregnant in the near future should wait until after child bearing.
